Acute Intensive Services

Expert mental healthcare for youth experiencing serious symptoms who will benefit from ongoing treatment by highly trained and caring professionals

As part of the continuum of care offered at Edgewood, there are four programs designed for youth under the umbrella of Intensive Mental Healthcare Services.

Residential Treatment Program
Hospital Diversion Program
Partial Hospitalization Program
Intensive Outpatient Program

Through these services, Edgewood can assess and treat youth (ages 12 to 17) who require immediate and intensive support. Youth can be referred to us by any counselor, therapist, behavioral health professional, medical provider, parent or caregiver, school administrator, or other professional who believes the child is at risk.

Our Acute Intensive Mental Health Services provide short-term, high-level care with the immediate goal of increasing safety and decreasing high-risk behaviors. With a focus on the family, we provide therapeutic intervention, crisis management, and psychiatric services.

Residential Treatment Program

For youth with more intensive needs who have not stabilized in other programs, our residential treatment program provides a safe, nurturing space to begin deeper healing. With 24/7 care from a dedicated team, your child will receive therapy, medication support, and skill-building to help manage emotions and reduce harmful behaviors over time.

Stays typically range from 30 to 90 days for Kaiser-referred youth, and from six to 12 months for youth placed through a school district’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Hospital Diversion Program

As an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, our short-term residential programs offer 24/7 care in a well-supervised and structured environment. Our multidisciplinary team includes residential counselors, clinicians, and nursing and psychiatry staff. We provide therapeutic interventions, skill-building, and resources to reduce high-risk behaviors and promote long-term recovery.

The average stay is two weeks. A stay may be shorter or longer depending on medical necessity and authorization by a youth’s referral source.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Our Partial Hospitalization Program is a step down from inpatient care, allowing your child to receive full-day mental health support while continuing to live at home or in a community placement. We focus on accurate diagnosis, medication evaluation, and day-to-day emotional support in a safe, therapeutic setting.

Services run Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Most stays last between two to four weeks.

Intensive Outpatient Program

After a mental health crisis, Edgewood’s Intensive Outpatient Program helps youth take the next step toward recovery while staying connected to home, school, and community. This part-time program provides structure and support in the afternoons, focusing on reducing risky behaviors and building practical tools to manage stress and emotions. Parents and caregivers are also included to help support progress at home.

Youth usually attend for two to eight weeks, three to five days per week, from 10:30 to 1:30 pm and 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. We tailor schedules to meet each family’s needs.

What's Included

All youth in Acute Intensive programs at Edgewood receive the following as part of their mental healthcare at Edgewood.

Treatment is designed for each youth.
  • Our clinicians meet youth where they are and listen and observe to provide appropriate guidance on their path to mental health and wellbeing.
Through guided conversations with peers, youth can explore their thoughts and feelings.
  • Our mental health therapists provide a safe and supportive environment.
We support the whole family in our approach to mental healthcare.
  • We provide strategies and support for families so they can be allies in a young person’s mental health journey
Whether outpatient or residential, our programs provide a therapeutic environment where staff can readily provide coping techniques and supervision.
We can immediately stabilize and assess a young person undergoing a mental health crisis.
  • Our staff engage with youth to de-escalate emotional distress and help them manage symptoms.
We provide active communication and coordination.

We assess additional support needs through therapy or medication.
  • Youth in our residential or partial residential programs are evaluated to determine what types of treatment will aid their stability and progress.
We ensure safe and effective use of medication during treatment.
  • For youth in our Residential Program, our on-site psychiatric staff provides ongoing medication monitoring, adjustments, and education to support each individual's treatment plan.
  • For youth in our Intensive Outpatient Program, medication is managed by their community providers, with coordination as needed to support continuity of care.
