Intensive Outpatient Program

Supporting youth ages 12–17 after school with intensive care that helps them manage mental health challenges while staying connected to school, family, and daily life.

About Our Program

We know how important it is for teens to receive the right help while still being able to live at home and stay engaged in their community. Edgewood’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed to support both youth and families by providing therapeutic and recreational care after school in a safe, structured environment.

Our program helps reduce high-risk behaviors while teaching practical coping strategies and crisis management skills that benefit both teens and their caregivers. Families are active partners in the process, every step of the way.

Program Details

  • Typical length of stay is 2 to 8 weeks
  • Afternoon sessions run from 2:00 to 5:00 PM
  • Youth attend 3–5 days a week, depending on individual needs
  • Personalized schedules are created for each teen

Our program provides close supervision, monitoring, and support for youth following a mental health crisis, while gradually reintegrating them into their homes, schools, and communities safely and with confidence.

Treatment takes place in a therapeutic, group-based environment, which includes:

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills groups
  • Occupational therapy
  • Psychoeducation groups
  • Creative expression and behavior activation activities

In addition to group work, youth also participate in individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy. Medication management is coordinated with existing community providers.

What We Do

IOP is best suited for youth who need more support than a weekly outpatient program can provide, but who do not require hospitalization or residential care. Our program includes:

  • Compassionate supervision and crisis support
  • Comprehensive mental health assessment and individualized treatment planning
  • Individual, family, and group therapy focused on safety, emotional regulation, and skill-building (including DBT practices)
  • Education for youth and their caregivers about mental health and coping skills
  • Creative and expressive therapies, therapeutic recreation, and holistic wellness activities
  • Guidance from case managers to coordinate with schools, outpatient providers, and community services
  • Active family participation and caregiver support throughout care
  • A clear discharge plan to ensure ongoing stability after completing the program

Who We Help

The Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for youth ages 12–17 who:

  • Need more intensive care than weekly outpatient treatment but do not require full-time hospitalization or residential treatment
  • Are transitioning from hospitalization, residential treatment, or a partial hospitalization program
  • Attend school regularly but are finding their symptoms increasingly difficult to manage
  • Are showing high-risk behaviors (such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or severe emotional struggles), experiencing complex family or social stressors, or facing recent crises

What to Expect

  • A comprehensive assessment and individualized plan as soon as your teen is registered
  • 24/7 support during programming hours from a warm, multidisciplinary team of clinicians, nurses, and care staff
  • Discharge planning from day one, to ensure your child receives the most supportive and least restrictive care possible
  • Strong communication and coordination with families, schools, outpatient teams, and community providers, so everyone is working together
  • A smooth transition back to lower levels of outpatient care once the program is successfully completed

We provide the support and space families need during challenging times—while helping youth stabilize, grow, and practice new skills so they can return home, to school, and to their communities with greater confidence and resilience.
