Partial Hospitalization Program

An all-day therapeutic program for youth ages 12 to 17, offering the highest level of outpatient mental health care.

About Our Program

The Partial Hospitalization Program runs between 2 to 4 weeks on average, and youth participate in programming Monday to Friday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The program utilizes close supervision, monitoring, and support to ensure safety after a mental health crisis and works towards gradually re-integrating youth into their homes and communities.

The goal of the Partial Hospitalization Program is to ensure families and their children have appropriate community-based supports (both therapeutic and recreational) as well as facilitate a smooth re-entry into school upon completion of the program. The program targets the reduction of high-risk behaviors with an emphasis on developing coping strategies and crisis management skills for both youth and their caregivers.

The Partial Hospitalization Program takes place in a therapeutic milieu setting that emphasizes group-based treatment, including groups such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Skills Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychoeducation Therapy, Creative Application, and Behavior Activation. Youth in this program receive individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and medication management.

What We Do

Edgewood’s Partial Hospitalization Program is ideally suited for youth requiring intensive support and stabilization before being ready to return to school. Partial Hospitalization offers an important bridge between residential programs and community-based care, and can be used as a step-down from residential or as a step-up if a youth’s mental health symptoms are worsening despite community-based support.

Partial Hospitalization takes place in a group-based setting that includes:

  • Supervision and crisis support
Comprehensive mental health assessment and treatment planning
  • Individual, family, and group therapy with an emphasis on skill-building, emotional regulation (including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills), and safety
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
  • Psychoeducation for youth and caregivers
  • Group-based milieu that provides creative and expressive arts therapy, therapeutic recreation, and holistic wellness activities
  • Ongoing case management, discharge planning, and coordination with outpatient and community providers
  • Robust caregiver/family engagement and support throughout the course of care

Who We Help

Partial Hospitalization is indicated for youth ages 12 to 17 who are:

  • Returning home from residential treatment or recent hospitalization and need intensive daily support to ensure a smooth transition back into their community
  • Experiencing a mental health crisis with symptoms that are becoming too acute to manage safely in community-based programs
  • Struggling to attend school on a daily basis due to increasing mental health symptoms
  • Presenting with acute psychiatric or behavioral health crises such as suicidality, self-harm behavior, emotional/behavioral dysregulation, and other mental health symptoms

What to Expect

  • Comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment planning upon admission
  • Ongoing supervision and support provided by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, psychiatry, nursing, and direct care staff
  • Discharge planning begins at intake in order to ensure that youth remain in the least restrictive environment needed for their care and safety
  • Intensive case management and collaboration provided throughout treatment to ensure continuity of care (including referring providers, families, outpatient teams, and school partners)
  • Successful reintegration to school and providers at a lower-level of care after completion of program
